Stroll a hidden Charlotte-fall garden,
then savor lunch with friends at Kid Cashew.

Please reserve by Friday so I can book our table.

THE GARDEN

Tom and Lib bought a house in Kingswood in 1990. Backyard gardeners, they said. A yard with potential. Thirty-six years later, it's 2.25 acres of woodland paths and 95+ varieties of Japanese maples, with something new to discover around every turn: a stone archway, a moss garden, a bench set beneath the trees.

I've met Tom there. He's delightful, and you'll often find him out in the garden, tending the place he loves.

I can't promise peak color. When I visited two weekends ago with my girls, it hadn't started yet. But I know there will be a lot more color than there was then.

The paths wind up and down, with stairs built from boulders, so wear comfortable shoes. Heels, no.

Four rescue bunnies live in a hutch in the woodland. Tom calls it the Taj MaHutch.

THE LUNCH

Then we'll settle in at Kid Cashew in Dilworth, one of my family's favorite restaurants. Small plates meant for sharing, Mediterranean flavors, a wood-fired grill, and plenty of vegan and gluten-free options. We'll be there during happy hour, so we can order generously. Checks are separate.

And yes, the name comes from a goat. Ask me about it.

Come for the maples. Stay for the other Lake Norman locals you'll meet, the ones who love time outside and sharing a good meal.
